Remembering Mike Burns

Older residents at Upham will be sad to hear that Ex-Police Constable Mike Burns has recently died at his home in Hungary at the age of 72yrs.

Mike was the resident Country Beat Officer for the Upham and Durley Beats in the late 1960’s. He was resident and worked from an office in the Hampshire Constabulary Police House at Lower Upham for several years. His patrols were predominantly by bicycle in the two parishes. Previous occupants of the house and post being PC Harold Bunker & PC Standeven.

During his period at Upham Mike became active as a supporter of the Upham Youth Club which resulted in him founding and managing a very succesful Upham Youth Club Football team that won distinction in winning a Winchester & District Youth tournament against significant opponents. In later years ex-members of that team were responsible for the founding of the current Upham Football Club.

Mike left Upham on promotion to Sergeant and retired in the mid-80’s from a post at Police Headquarters, Winchester.
